The event
On 16 January 2025, RCP London Events proudly hosted the Global Launch of The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology Commission on Clinical Obesity. Chaired by Professor Francesco Rubino of King’s College London, this landmark event was the culmination of a three-year international investigation by 56 global experts into how best to classify and manage obesity.
The event launched the commission’s major findings, including proposals for new diagnostic frameworks for pre-clinical and clinical obesity, developed to improve prevention, diagnoses and treatment.
A hybrid event of global scale
Over 70 in-person attendees gathered at RCP London Events for the event which was simultaneously streamed to more than 3,000 virtual participants across multiple continents, including the US, China and Kuwait. Conference centres around the globe hosted their own parallel sessions, with live links and shared discussions feeding directly into the London-based hub at RCP housed in the venue’s smaller built-in theatre, the Seligman Theatre.
Speakers joined both in-person and remotely, and the event featured multiple parallel panel discussions, Q&A sessions and coordinated streaming across several time zones. Some regions, including China, even held mirror events that ran concurrently with live interaction between audiences.
Why RCP London Events?
With just six to eight weeks’ lead time, Professor Rubino and his team were seeking a venue that could offer more than just space; they needed full confidence in the technical infrastructure, project management and on-the-day support to deliver an event of this complexity.
The venue’s AV infrastructure and experienced in-house team made RCP London Events the clear choice. Senior Meetings & Events Planner Nicola Winfield and AV Sales Manager Francis Burrows responded rapidly to the challenge, collaborating with AV Technical Manager Junior Kimba to upgrade software and scale the platform to deliver international reach. Zoom capabilities were enhanced, parallel tech rehearsals were coordinated across continents and bespoke support was given to every remote site.
Going above and beyond
The RCP AV team worked directly with global AV contacts, handled complex time-zone scheduling and even supported the client’s email marketing efforts, stepping in to manage platforms like Mailchimp, usually outside of the venue remit. Despite the scale and pressure, the event ran flawlessly.
The impact
The event delivered enormous international visibility, sparking policy discussions in multiple governments about implementing the Commission’s recommendations. RCP London Events became the physical and symbolic centre of a truly global conversation about one of the world’s most pressing health issues.
