Today is #EarthDay, an annual event to demonstrate support for environmental protection, and we can’t think of a better day to announce that the RCP has been awarded a ‘gold standard’ award for waste management for 2021.
Sustainability isn't just a buzzword for us: it's a lifestyle and a conscious choice we decide to act on day after day in all our business operations, from catering to waste management and energy. We constantly strive to minimise our impact on the environment and we're always on the lookout for innovative ways of doing so, which this award highlights.
We work with waste management supplier First Mile and 80% of all waste that is collected from both our London and Liverpool venues must be recycled, this includes what we put into general waste.
Out of 15,000 business accounts where First Mile provides environmental services, only 300 achieved the coveted gold standard for recycling. The Royal College of Physicians achieved this by recycling a large number of different materials, from mixed recycling to food waste and waste coffee grounds, and by getting the right placement of bins internally. This enabled us to capture over 80% of all waste produced as recycling.
Future sustainable efforts of the RCP
It has been a challenging couple of years throughout the pandemic but we are delighted to have won this award for our team efforts. Moving forward we aim to not only maintain the gold standard, but to look into ways of further reducing our carbon footprint and, where possible, reducing the amount of waste further still.
Some of the future sustainable initiatives we are hoping to achieve at our London venue this year include:
We are currently undertaking an LV electrical works programme to modernise the venue’s electrical infrastructure. Low voltage lighting is incredibly energy efficient, especially when compared with incandescent bulbs. We are also in the process of LED lighting replacement works for areas of the college running with obsolete and ineffective lighting provision. Finally, we have replaced all our electrical meters with Smart meters ensuring more accurate consumption readings.
We are currently ISO 14011 certified and are waiting to receive recertification until 2025. ISO 14011 is a universal standard for environmental auditing, audit procedures and auditing of environmental management systems.
Carbon Trust standard
We are the first and only royal college to achieve The Carbon Trust Standard which is the world’s leading independent certification of an organisation’s achievements in reducing environmental impact and are awaiting the recertification of this.
Green Energy electricity
We are excited to start a new energy contract later this year using green energy electricity which will further help us to cut our carbon footprint.
We are proud of our commitment to sustainability on #EarthDay and every other day of the year.
