RCP London Events champions development with new AV apprenticeship

At RCP London Events, we are committed to investing in talent and nurturing the next generation of AV professionals. Following National Apprenticeship Week (10-14 February), we announced our participation in the newly launched Level 5 Audiovisual Technician Apprenticeship Standard, welcoming our first AV apprentice, Arron Montgomery.

Addressing the skills gap in AV

Developed in collaboration with Middlesbrough College and leading industry employers, this innovative two-year apprenticeship programme is designed to bridge the long-standing skills gap in the AV sector. Our venue has played an active role in shaping this framework, with Ben Pain, Head of Audio Visual Resources at RCP London Events and Spaces at The Spine, working alongside AV experts to establish a structured and comprehensive training model tailored to industry needs.

“Five or six years ago, there was no Government-supported AV apprenticeship framework, making it difficult to bring new talent into the industry,” says Ben Pain. “I was approached by a specialist AV recruitment agency to discuss solutions, which led to a collaboration with AV experts and venues to create this much-needed programme. The launch of the apprenticeship is a significant milestone, and I’m thrilled that the RCP is playing a key role in developing the next generation of AV technicians.”

A hands-on learning experience

Arron officially began his two-year apprenticeship in January 2025, embarking on a journey that combines practical learning in our state-of-the-art venue with academic study. The structured programme equips apprentices with the technical expertise and real-world experience needed to thrive in the AV industry.

With contributions from top employers - including Google, the British Museum, Bloomberg, and the National Gallery, the programme ensures that apprentices gain industry-relevant skills. Originally designed to bring fresh talent into the events sector post-COVID, it provides young people with a solid foundation to flourish in this dynamic field.

Investing in the future of AV

Through initiatives like this, RCP London Events continues to champion professional development, innovation and inclusivity in the AV sector. By welcoming Arron as our first apprentice, we reaffirm our commitment to supporting emerging talent and strengthening the future of the AV industry.

Reflecting on the importance of this apprenticeship, Ben Pain adds: “Having worked in the AV and live events industry for over 25 years, since my first role as an AV technician, I’m passionate about this industry and the people who work within it. Knowing how to design and operate AV technology to support communication and the sharing of ideas is a vital skill that requires knowledge of physics, electronics, IT and communication. I feel strongly that we have a responsibility to support the next generation in every way we can. I was very proud to be part of the team that designed the apprenticeship and I’m extremely happy to offer Arron an opportunity here with us at RCP London Events.”

As we continue to invest in skills development, we look forward to seeing Arron’s progress and the positive impact of this apprenticeship programme on the wider AV industry. We asked him a few questions about his new role.

I first saw the availability on the Government website and applied through there. The application process was easy and I received help along the way.

I was drawn to the AV apprenticeship programme because it offers a perfect balance of hands-on experience and structured learning. I’ve always been fascinated by technology and how audiovisual systems enhance communication, entertainment, and business operations.

This apprenticeship provides the opportunity to work with high-end equipment, develop technical skills, and gain industry-recognised qualifications while learning from experienced professionals. I’m eager to build a strong foundation in AV and I believe this programme will give me the practical knowledge and confidence to succeed in this dynamic industry.

Since joining RCP London Events in September, I’ve gained valuable hands-on experience with AV technology, from setting up and troubleshooting equipment to understanding how different systems integrate. One of the most valuable learning experiences has been working on live events, where I’ve developed problem-solving skills and the ability to stay calm under pressure.

I’ve also learned the importance of teamwork and communication when collaborating with colleagues and clients to ensure smooth operations. Additionally, being exposed to industry best practices and gaining insights from experienced professionals has really helped me build confidence and technical expertise.

One project that really helped me develop my AV skills was assisting with the setup and operation of a live conference event. I was responsible for setting up microphones, projectors, and video conferencing equipment, ensuring everything was properly connected and tested before the event started.

This experience taught me the importance of attention to detail, problem-solving under pressure, and working efficiently as part of a team. It also gave me hands-on practice with different AV systems, helping me gain confidence in handling real-world challenges.

The support and mentorship at RCP London Events has been invaluable in helping me settle into my role and prepare for my formal apprenticeship.

From day one, the team has been incredibly welcoming, offering guidance and encouragement as I learn the ropes. My mentors have taken the time to explain complex AV systems, allowing me to gain hands-on experience while feeling confident in asking questions and seeking advice. Regular check-ins and training sessions have helped me build both technical skills and a deeper understanding of industry best practices. Their patience and willingness to share knowledge have made a huge difference in my learning journey, ensuring that I feel fully prepared to take on the challenges of my apprenticeship.

As I progress through the next two years of my apprenticeship, I’m most excited about continuing to develop my technical skills and gaining more hands-on experience with advanced AV equipment. I look forward to working on a variety of projects, from live events to system installations, and building my confidence in troubleshooting and problem-solving. I’m also eager to learn from experienced professionals, deepen my understanding of the industry, and work towards earning valuable qualifications. Ultimately, I’m excited to see how my skills evolve and contribute more to the team as I grow in my role.
