Lasdun’s design was celebrated immediately. The building received the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Bronze Medal in 1964, a Civic Trust Award in 1967, and in 1992 the RIBA Trustees Medal, where it was praised as “the best architecture of its time anywhere in the world.”
