To celebrate its 500th anniversary, the Royal College of Physicians (RCP), held an exclusive summer festival in its private medicinal garden with street food stalls and fabulous entertainment. The event also saw the launch of a very special hot air balloon inspired offer!
Guests travelled through time, igniting their senses and sampling five centuries of gastronomic delights and new world cuisine, whilst getting hands on with the foodie experts and finding out how Physicians have been at the heart of many historical developments.
Located in the stunning heart of Regent’s Park in central London, this year the RCP will mark its 500 anniversary having been first established by Thomas Linacre, Henry VIII’s physician who persuaded the king to found a college to regulate the practice of medicine in 1518. Today, the RCP continues to play a pivotal role in raising standards and shaping public health.
One of the highlights of the event was the launch of a very special 500th birthday dining package offer. The ‘Up, Up and Away’ package will transport guests through 500 years of culinary delights. As early as 1795 the famous ‘Tales of Baron Munchausen’ featured the College in exuberant mood. The eponymous hero of the work is said to have lifted the RCP’s then domed home in the City of London into the sky by means of his hot air balloon and suspended it above the Georgian skyline for three full months. Yet, on account of the quality of the revelries and the copious quantity of food on offer at the RCP, the Baron remarked that the members of the College didn’t even notice that they were in the sky!
To commemorate the RCP’s 500th anniversary, they have re-created a wonderful evening that brings the Baron’s tale to life. The special offer package includes a sparkling wine and canapé reception, three course menu with half a bottle of wine, coffee and petit fours per person plus a stunning black and gold table dressing with twinkling lights and hot air balloon table centre pieces, priced at just £75 per person, the evening is sure to delight.
Commenting on the evening, Natacha Allen, Head of Sales & Marketing at the RCP said: “2018 marks a truly unique milestone for this iconic venue so we were determined to pull out all the stops to celebrate. We trawled the college archives to find the most exciting figures from the history and I am delighted that our future guests will get to experience the type of hospitality that has made us legendary.”
The RCP was joined at the event by Sloane’s Hot Chocolate. As well as sampling their products, they told the story of how Hans Sloane as physician to the Royal Family in the 17th century popularised hot chocolate as a health drink. Anyone booking a show around during 2018 will receive a gift of Sloane’s Hot Chocolate as part of the birthday celebrations.
